These words came to me recently after a walk along the Water of Leith. I was particularly struck by people’s reaction to a weir at Dean Village, an artificial waterfall.

The weir at Dean Village seemed to offer a waypoint for those walking along the path. As I stood for a while, I noticed people slowing for a moment, some staying for a few seconds, others for longer. Many wanted to capture what they’d experienced. Here is some of what I took away with me:

Pausing quietly
Cameras held

In reverence witnessing
For history repeating

As nature meets hands
hands meet nature

Sounding and rushing
Quickening and hastening

Meeting their meld
Co-creating, co-sustaining

Shedding light into light
Obscuring the obscurer

Transformed unchanged
Always and never the same

One and one
the same

A view overhead of a weir in the foreground, with water crashing down. Before the water falls over the edge, it’s still and calm. In the background, luscious trees line the water’s edge, with blue sky peeking in between the leaves.
