I spoke to the BBC about why it was important that my wife and I could get married in church.

The Scottish Episcopal Church’s equal marriage vote in 2017 meant my wife and I could get married in church.

I spoke about this for BBC Scotland’s coverage of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly – in 2022 the Church of Scotland also voted to allow equal marriage in its churches.

“Five years ago, the Scottish Episcopal Church voted in favour of this [equal marriage]. Victoria Elliott was a member of their Synod, and she decided to get married herself:

“Deep down, marriage was what we wanted. But for us, it really was fundamental that we would get married in church. It wasn’t about it being a beautiful building or a beautiful choir.

“It was because of the fact that our faith is so central to who we are as individuals, and also how we understand our relationship, and how we understand the fact that our love is rooted in God’s love.

“We really wanted our wedding itself to be about God’s love, and the fact that we’re almost mirroring, as in other married couples – mirroring God’s love through our relationship and the need to be close to God in that in order to be able to show God’s love in the world through our relationship.”

Water at the weir

These words came to me recently after a walk along the Water of Leith. I was particularly struck by people’s reaction to a weir at Dean Village, an artificial waterfall.
